What science ideas did you learn?

This week we learned how light can create shadows by going around an object. To the upper left side of the question is a picture explaining how the light creates a shadow.

How did you learn these ideas?
We learned these ideas in class by drawing various ray diagrams and taking a bowl of water and putting water droplets into it and watching their waves they create in the water. We also had a metal cylander and watched water droplets move around it and create waves along the sides.

Why is it important to know this idea (What real world application is there)?

If I was playing "manhunt" at night and the seeker had a flashlight I would like to find a place where the light would not reflect and create a shadow so I could not be caught. Another real world application applying to this week's blog is if I was in college and my proffesser asked me how does light Move around a house, I could tell him thanks to learning this.
