Blog: 10/26/09

This week I have been sick from Wendsday to Saturday, so I do not know about what happened in science this week. So, I will talk about Monday and Tuesday.

What science ideas did you learn?

We learned about movement. We mainly focused on how you can see things moving, but others might not.

How did you learn these ideas?

We learned these ideas by watching Mr. Segen hold a soccer ball in his hand and slowly move about the front of the room with it, while the students watched in a "Telescope" [Paper rolled into a "hot dog roll" shape] and followed it with our eyes. We saw that while Mr. Segen saw that the ball was not moving, he was staring at it the whole time; while we, the students, saw him and the ball move.

Why is it important to know this idea (What real world application is there)?
If I was a Barbury Pirate from the island of Tripoli, in 1811, I would need to know if an enemie ship is approaching by seeing through my telescope, to know if it is moving.
